North Wails

Flooded fluorescent mustard colored walls
surround me and assault my vision daily;
dreams of sunny open spaces always call
memories of happiness I recall are hazy.

Maybe it's the stench of this carpet that stings
to the point of erasing all I recall with fondness;
musky to the point that it drowns all my dreams
encompassing me with all that is darkness.

For half of my day I think I'm in an asylum;
the madness that exists is beyond comprehension,
I try to impose my will but I feel like I'm on an island
and I can't escape because I'm in another dimension.

On a daily basis I serve my time like a prisoner
paying my debt to society trying to be a survivor;
the warden here is oppressive and just sinister
to his methods of punishment I'm not a subscriber.

So I spend my time trying to stay as busy as possible;
at times I get a reprieve by looking out of my window
seeing the snow fall makes my agony almost inaudible;
silently it disappears and I wish I could let this all go.

I hear the outside world and I long to get my time done;
it beckons me as I see glimpses through my peripheral vision
trying to  keep my sanity intact and not come undone;
it’s pull is so strong to the point I hate my situation.

Finally, the audible alarm of my phone signals my freedom,
I unshackle the weight of this daily responsibility
and follow the path home to the one who is my beacon;
greeted by the light that is my love who makes it real to me.

Our DNA

Seemingly out of the unknown
where no one could even hear
is where you’re held most dear
and where billions have grown

Multiplying with every passing second
a vast information highway so minute
computes information seemingly out of air
wrapped in the DNA that two people share

Coiled information with nothing amiss
its genetic code causing shape to appear
something so perfect it’s hard to dismiss
and something that we’ll hold so dear

Sadly most precious things are taken for granted
as they aren’t even given a second thought
full of regret their freedom has been supplanted
by a life that was nothing more than an afterthought

Abusing this life we’re given and don’t think twice
what was precious in the beginning made you come undone
turn around and abuse others so what if it’s a life
killing others and killing ourselves what have we become?

Something that came out so pure and innocent
has grown into a human being cold and corrupt
thinks so little of others becoming so arrogant
made from love but don’t know where love went

Raise each other up while pushing each other down
push and pull, back and forth and can’t find a way
with every breath we take it seems the more we drown
doomed to fail we can’t break away from what we are in our DNA

Our Love

I see the veins in your hands
blue in color, soft like a whisper
as I hold your hands in mine;
your cuticles I feel in my grasp
and the warmth makes me whole

I see the freckles that light your face
as I look into your eyes I smile;
turning into the wrinkles of happiness
finding love within this special place
encompassed within the space of our souls

Spinning around my mind is a scent of your potion
it moves all inside me and gives my life motion
I’ve got it together but when I’m with you
I come undone and you make me feel childlike
I see our future in your eyes and I’m satisfied

Nothing feels better than you next to me
the rain is wetter and the sun’s rays brighter
the cold is like sadness the heat is like madness
these feelings I hold so much fuller life can be
since I know I’ll always have you around.

You’ve touched me like some unknown miracle
I can’t express what you’ve helped me become
a feeling unsaid but you can feel my emotions
it’s something we both feel no need to explain
love coursing through our veins as we are one.

Wasted Intentions

Postcards on the edge of intentions
sitting on my nightstand ready to send,
written words on pressed cardboard
their envelopes waiting to be sealed;
time goes by and so does another year
I’ve ignored their pleas as they just sit there.

Indistinguishable

The blurred lines hard to define just an inch away
crossing over to where there is no taking back,
snow blind my vision has become and I'm lost;
this new year in just a number with the same old stuff.

My Last Memory

I’m sure it was a memory, yet so vivid;
I could see myself lying there
playing with blades of grass
as I laid on the warm soft ground.

Looking up I could see my mother,
she was calling me by my name;
her lips moved but there was no sound
and then she quickly fades away.

I wake up to find myself inside a room;
all alone lying in a hospital bed my
youngest recollection as a small child
and realize that I’m not dreaming.

So young, yet I was never afraid of being
alone, nor of needle injections or horse pills.
But things don’t stay the same and now
I can’t help worrying about everything.

Especially of dying. And it hits you like
a ton of bricks when you’re at that moment,
all of your memories good and bad; all
of your relationships and your regrets.

I’m awake but blackness surrounds me;
I hear panicked voices, but I can’t see a thing.
I feel a gentle touch and soft sobbing I want
to say something but I can’t; then, it’s all over.

You hope when your gone, people cared
enough so as to go and pay their respects
but who’s to say, you’re dead and the last
memory is like a dream, one you never wake from.

Wonderful Realization

Summer’s lazy days finally comes to its finality
with the coming and passing of another Labor Day;
no more holding of hands on the boardwalk
and the sound of children’s voices slowly fades
like a rising fog making the day visibly clear;
a change of another season is almost here.

Cricket and cicada sounds no longer pierce the air;
like the hot humid air they’ve all disappeared.
Annuals and perennials faces now began to droop
saddened they can no longer greet us day by day,
knowing we won’t have our morning companions to greet;
their cycle of life to live and procreate is now complete.

Another phase has been ushered in as the seasons collide;
fierce, bold, blustery winds give us no choice to decide.
Summer’s gone away and now nature takes its leave,
chlorophyll takes a reprieve as the trees began to slumber
deciduous they’ve become as palettes of colored leaves pirouette,
dancing silently in the air and falling to the ground everywhere.

Hot beverages with cocoa and pumpkin become in high demand;
people in jackets and turtle neck sweaters as love becomes grand,
fireplaces flickering at night as frost meets the morning light.
Lazy in slumber we’ve become feeling the warmth of each other
as we lay under bed covers my eyes flicker against your skin;
gradually waking up to the wonderful realization that it’s autumn again.
